Inhalt: The first part of this course deals with the question, why we use analytical models in economics, including a discussion of the pros and cons of such kind of analyses. We discuss which macroeconomic models are on the market, and then put our focus on real business cycle (RBC) and dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models in more detail. We learn how these models are set up intuitively, discuss an analysis as explicit example and, at the end of this part, derive one RBC model analytically ourselves. In the second part of this course, we get a brief, hands-on introduction into Matlab and Dynare (the latter being a Matlab-based programming language for solving dynamic macro models easily). At the end of this part, we will implement the RBC model derived analytically as a Dynare code and undertake some analyses ourselves. The third part deals with model extensions by introducing real and nominal frictions or potentially other sectors and regions to our baseline model. We learn what such extensions can buy us at which costs. If time permits, we have a look at a dynamic large-scale macro model provided by the Bundesbank. The Dynare codes are publically available.
