Inhalt: Criticized, celebrated, thrown away, or desired, commodities lie at the heart of our experiences and contemporary societies. This seminar approaches commodities from an anthropological perspective, through the discussion of a series of key theoretical texts and case studies. It begins by developing a historical overview of the notion of the commodity in the social sciences - and particularly in anthropology - highlighting some of the ways in which it has been formulated, critiqued, and employed to understand its effects on social relations. Combining theoretical readings with ethnographic case studies, the seminar then turns to several central contemporary questions explored by anthropologists: How is the value of commodities produced through social and political processes? What can the study of commodities, linking distant worlds, reveal about globalization processes? To what extent have commodities become immaterial? What resists commodification, and which moral, social, and political processes limit or prevent the commodification of certain goods, such as culture, nature, or bodies?
