Inhalt: In this seminar, we will explore aspects of language, culture, and diversity by examining authentic texts. Literary and media texts can be viewed as the personal voice of a culture and language learning is a highly creative and personal process. Participation in discussions and in reflective activities is absolutely essential to enhance linguistic proficiency and critical thinking skills as well as to develop cultural sensitivity and a better understanding of not only different English-speaking cultures, but also one's own.

Englisch/FSZ: Einstufungstest für die Englischveranstaltungen (Studienbegleitende Veranstaltung)

Inhalt: Der computerbasierte Quick Placement Test (QPT) dauert ca. 20-30 Minuten und prüft Hör- und Leseverständnis sowie Grammatik- und Wortschatzkenntnisse. Um den Test ablegen zu können, müssen Studierende ihren Studentenausweis und einen Fotoausweis ins Selbstlernzenturm 5.104 mitbringen. Inhalt: Creative writing as a distinct academic field is relatively new but has been rapidly expanding in the universities worldwide. In the seminar we will study theories about the creative process and how to best employ these for our own creative output. We will start with poetry and essays, but then go on to short stories and - towards the end - attempt the first chapter(s) of a novel.

Inhalt: Who? (Participants) This seminar is not just for drama kings and queens, but for anyone interested in the link between written and spoken words in general as well as dialogues you will learn to compose and perform in specific. What? (Objectives) This seminar is a (socio)linguistic and dramatic potpourri designed to help you - expand your vocabulary and pinpoint linguistic nuances - enhance your pronunciation, paralanguage, nonverbal communication, and presentation skills - improve your writing and listening skills - overcome pagefright and stagefright How? (Methods) We will play with the concept of the play, which is a dramatization of a story. First, we will read and analyze a short story that has been transformed into a play. Then, we will read and examine other short stories/vignettes to assist you in creating your own dialogues based on key events. You will have the opportunity to workshop your dramatic scenarios. Afterwards, you will be expected to translate them into a final performance, e.g. on stage, in a short film, a podcast, or a radio play, etc. The seminar will consist of group as well as individual appointments.

English Cultures II: German Americans (Seminar)

Inhalt: Roughly 23 percent of Americans claim some degree of German ancestry or ethnic origin. This seminar will not only explore German-American history and immigration, but also the American perception of “Germanness” and the over 300 years of German-American influence on the religious, social, and cultural life in America.

FSZ/Englisch: Englisch B1/B2. Interkulturalität und Sprachvertiefung. Frenemy, Foreign, Friend? Using English to Survive in a Multicultural World. (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Lynette Kirschner

Inhalt: English is a foreign language for most speakers, yet it is a global language. Simply knowing the correct words or grammar does not make a person competent in a global world. What does a person say and do to be ‘culturally’ acceptable? This course looks briefly at various theories about culture and actively practices strategies to help a person not only communicate effectively in a multi-cultural world but also understand it better.
