Effective Writing in English (Übung)

Inhalt: Do you have a good command of academic vocabulary? Do you know how to write a proper introduction for a research paper? Or what strategies apart from summary you can use for the conclusion? Do you know the difference between informal and formal English? Have you mastered the departmental style sheet? Do you know what a literature review is and how to integrate it into a research paper? Do you have a good idea of how to vary your sentence structure or integrate creative elements into your academic prose? Can you use commas effectively? If you have answered no to three or more of these questions, then this might be the course for you. Each participant will gain experience reading and responding to academic texts, working with a variety of reference works, and peer-editing. Students will be introduced to and practice using academic register and conventions. Moreover, everyone will have regular written assignments which will receive constructive feedback. Finally, students will be encouraged to develop their own academic voice.

Inhalt: Do you split your infinitive and still go out in public? Is your modifier dangling and the others won’t tell you? Grammar is a necessary ’evil’ for teaching, speaking and understanding language so why not try and make it interesting? In this course students will be looking at grammar through the eyes and ears of pop culture. What can vampires teach us about register? Can you learn modal verbs with a song? These questions and grammar points as well as many more will be covered in the class.

Understanding Texts (Übung)

Inhalt: How do you "understand" a text? In this seminar, we will answer that question by focusing on three objectives: 1) close examination (basic structure – key words – main ideas) 2) critical evaluation (think about the topic - link ideas and concepts - formulate questions and potential answers) 3) creative expression (create a text) After examining and evaluating various cultural texts, you will have the opportunity to create your own texts.
