Inhalt: “Many conflicts and little cooperation” – that is the usual perception of international relations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The MENA region is supposed to be one of the most conflict-prone in the world and, despite the principle of national sovereignty, international interferences in domestic affairs are a common feature. The seminar analyses the dynamics of regional politics and the role of international institutions for cooperation and conflict from an International Relations (IR) perspective.

Explaining Cases of International Politics (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Dawid Friedrich

Termin:
wöchentlich | Montag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 12.10.2015 - 29.01.2016 | C 12.009 Seminarraum

Inhalt: For many citizens, today’s international system is characterized by disorder, violence and risk. The international state system changes into a multipolar order, International Organizations and Regional Organizations as well as non-state actors become even more important across different policy fields, and (nation-state) democratic politics become structurally challenged. Thus, national policy-making and global governance are increasingly interwoven in complex multi-level structures. But how is it possible to, academically, explain these developments? The academic discipline of International Relations offers a number of theories that seek to explain these developments in the international system. Based on the theoretical knowledge acquired in the theory seminar “Introduction into IR” in the previous semester, this class tries to use these theories as tools to better understand the emergence of new actors in international politics, to explain the successes and failures of international cooperation and to discuss the legitimacy of global governance. The seminar will concentrate on the following three elements: - Philosophy of Science and Methodology of IR, - Research Design and Operationalization of IR theories, - Empirical analysis of cases of international politics.
