Digital Political Economy (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Armin Beverungen

Termin:
14-täglich | Donnerstag | 09:45 - 13:15 | 22.10.2015 - 29.01.2016 | extern | HMS

Inhalt: It is pretty much impossible to understand technological developments without recourse to economic logics. Much of the advances in digital media can be ascribed to capitalist interests represented by big corporations or wealthy entrepreneurs - for mobile phones see Apple and its iPhone; for search algorithms see Google Search; for logistics see Amazon and its drones. While the history of media technologies is often written with reference to the military, arguably today economics is more key – and that is what we will focus on. We will explore the political economy of digital media in many directions. How do the big Silicon Valley firms make money? How are we even to understand their business models, and what role do we play? Has material production disappeared in cloud computing and the like economy? If not where is it to be found? How are digital technologies used elsewhere, to manage labour or to speculate in finance?
