Satire (Seminar)

Inhalt: Satire is a powerful rhetorical device which holds up to ridicule human vices, follies, and shortcomings, making them seem absurd, sometimes even hilarious, often with the aim of wider social or political criticism. Its entertainment factor means it can reach a wide audience. It is a powerful tool of dissent as it usually works by implication rather than being explicit. It genealogy goes back to the ancient Greeks, today it is found in almost every medial form. In his seminar we will look at the origin and development of satire, identifiying and analysing techniques and strategies of satire in a wide range of media and forms such as narrative texts (Swift), songs (Tom Lehrer), magazines (Mad), picturebooks (David Macaulay’s Baa), film (Borat), operetta (Gilbert and Sullivan), political cartoons, advertising, tv-shows (e.g. The Colbert Report), cartoons (South Bank) etc. Students are also welcome to suggest other primary texts they would like to examine in the seminar.

Ver-rückte Phantasie. Einführung in die phantastische Literatur (Seminar)

Inhalt: Spielt die Phantasie in der phantastischen Literatur verrückt oder verrückt die Phantastik unsere Vorstellung von dem, was real oder imaginiert ist? Die Unauflösbarkeit dieses Spannungsverhältnisses zwischen Realität und Imagination ist kennzeichnend für die phantastische Literatur. Anhand von Erzähltexten wie Kafkas "Die Verwandlung", Perutz’ "Das Gasthaus zur Kartätsche", Borges’ "Die Bibliothek von Babel", Calvinos’ "Die unsichtbaren Städte" oder Morgners "Das Seil" wird das Seminar der Frage nachgehen, auf welche Weise die phantastische Literatur die Grenze zwischen Realität und Imagination irritiert. Als ein Fluchtpunkt der ausgewählten Texte aus der phantastischen Erzählliteratur des 20. Jahrhunderts wird zu erarbeiten sein, dass sie auf ein verändertes Wirklichkeitsverständnis reagieren, nämlich darauf, dass die Wirklichkeit selbst phantastisch anmutet (vgl. R. Stockhammer).
