Inhalt: Simply referring to the diversity of life on earth, biodiversity encompasses the varying degrees of complexity and levels of organization, from genetic to the ecosystem. Biodiversity loss is one of the major challenges of our times and the science of conservation biology aims at effectively minimizing the loss and thereby the maintenance of biodiversity. To achieve this we need to identify threats to specific ecosystems and/or their associated biodiversity in order to identify appropriate conservation strategies that preserve both biodiversity as well as ecosystem functioning and services. Within the framework of this course, the students will learn about the principles of biodiversity, nature conservation and the global drivers of biodiversity loss. In order to link the underlying theory to the challenges associated with the implementation of such conservation measures at various scales we will use the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve as a case study region for the conservation of extensively managed cultural landscapes. We thereby aim to link current conservation practices with ongoing research.
