Introduction to English literature (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: This module introduces students to the theories and practice of studying English literature. We will be looking at a variety of theoretical concepts and contemporary approaches and applying these to literary texts from different historical periods and genres. At the same time we will consider the social and cultural contexts of literature as well as its aesthetic, rhetorical, and ideological aspects. In the module you will acquire the competences required to study literature effectively: how to use the library and the internet, how to assess reference material and online resources, and how to present your findings. The introduction recommended for this course is Meyer, Michael: English and American Literatures. Tübingen: Francke 2011. (ISBN 9783825235505) If you would like to prepare in advance, please read F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" until the second week of term and Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" until the seventh week of term. If you don't already have a copy of the two texts, please use the editions listed below. It is reasonably priced. Copies are available at the campus bookshop. Fitzgerald , F. (ISBN 9780141182742) Drama Excursion: We will see a production of the play "Tod eines Handlungsreisenden" by Arthur Miller at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg on December 2nd (18:00-20:10).
