Inhalt: Sustainability issues have become a highly politicized everyday conversation. For instance, people's climate marches, F4F protest demonstrations and critical mass bicycle rallyes are indicators for a general social transformation that might - or might not - occur towards more sustainable development. From an academic point of view, dealing with these themes should not be left to the natural scientists, engineers, or political scientists alone. In fact, the study of sustainability issues is a transdisciplinary topic par excellence. The humanities, social sciences and here especially the broader field of cultural studies have a lot to contribute. This master seminar will be divided into three parts. Part I lays the groundwork by looking at the work of two major transdisciplinary scholars of science, Bruno Latour and Gregory Bateson. These scholars have been highly critical of the artificial division between mind vs. nature, rationale vs. affect, civilisation vs. wilderness (etc.); any study of sustainability values and cultures can be traced back to their epistomological thoughts. Part II will then enter arts and culture as pivotal parts for creating and experimenting with a consciousness and a culture of sustainability. Creativity and a sustainability culture could be seen as a counterparts to capitalism and a unilateral technological progress. Part III will finally enter the city and urban "spaces of possibilities" into the picture. Urban development is mostly characterized by unsustainable attitudes but there are exceptions to the rule, either labeled as urban "real utopias" or "alternative urban spaces". We will look at these places, and see how they are supported by artistic and cultural activities.
