Inhalt: This course examines the social and cultural contexts in which language is used and how these affect both written and spoken language. The focus will be on discourse communities and at the different ways social identity is expressed in language. Within this, language and gender will be the main focus wherein we will investigate how men and women use language differently in constructing their social identities. Small, in-class empirical group projects will deepen our investigations of these topics.

Inhalt: A solid understanding of English grammar is essential for competent – and self-confident – EFL teachers. This course focuses on a major topic of interest, the English verb phrase, and examines basic formal, functional and semantic categories of verb, verb complementation patterns and, above all, the expression of tense, aspect and modality in English. Frequent comparisons between English and German are made in order to enhance students’ awareness of differences between the two languages and to shed light on some of the difficulties faced by German learners of English. Some differences between British and American English are highlighted as well. Students will become familiar with these topics through readings, exercises, small-scale empirical investigations and group presentations.
