Inhalt: The participation of citizens and organised societal groups is considered by many as essential to bring about environmental sustainability. However - does participation actually "deliver" in that sense? This course will first introduce the basic concepts and theories on participation and participatory governane in environmental decision-making. We will review the current state of research, paying particular attention to the causal mechanisms linking participation and environmental outcomes of decision-making. Second, we will draw on a large database of case studies of (participatory) decision-making to formulate particular research questions conduct quantitative and/or qualitative research. This will involve statistical analysis (correlation, multiple regression) but also causal process tracing. The data were generated in the research project EDGE (Evaluating the Delivery of Environmental Governance using an Evidence-based Research Design, see https://sustainability-governance.net/edge). That way, students will gain a direct access to cutting-edge research questions and data. They will gain first-hand experience in the opportunities and challenges of using large-N data, which is partly quantitative, partly qualitative in nature and thus develop a sense for which methods to use in order to answer different research questions.
