Water Governance and Sustainable Development (Seminar)

Einzeltermin | Mo, 06.11.2023, 09:50 - Mo, 06.11.2023, 12:05 | C 40.164 Seminarraum

Inhalt: The sustainable use of water, the protection of water ecosystems and the management of water-related risks (e.g., droughts, floods, heavy rainfall) are central tasks of modern states, not only since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Water is an extremely dynamic policy field and is subject to - economization and privatization; - Europeanization and globalization; - increasing risks as a result of climate change and corresponding climate change adaptation measures; - the implementation of new forms of governance (e.g., participatory governance); and - a shift from administrative to natural scales (e.g., river basin management). These topics address essential questions of potential conflicts of interest, effective implementation of international and national regulations for access to quality drinking water, and corresponding policy approaches in different countries at the European and global levels. In the seminar, we will discuss the most important principles of water policy and governance and examine different governance approaches, policies, and actors as well as current water challenges. In particular, the seminar will shed light on the linkages between sustainable development and water governance and address the question of which governance approaches are suitable to enable sustainable water policy and resilient management of water risks.
