Inhalt: International politics is a key subject of daily news: from the conflicts in Syria and Libya via the trade "war" between the United States and China or the international spread of the coronavirus to the diplomatic haggling in large international negotiations, such as the recent United Nations climate negotiations in Madrid. This lecture gives a systematic introduction to the academic study of international politics focusing on three core areas: war and peace, functional international cooperation, and international political economy. Within each area, first we describe key structures and developments, both historical and contemporary, by drawing on core concepts, second we examine how each of these areas is governed at the international level, and third we introduce the most important explanations that have been developed in each of these areas. Given current global developments with the corona pandemic, I have decided to integrate into the lecture two questions of extreme contemporary relevance: • What can the discipline of International Relations teach us about the pandemic? • What do current political and social developments surrounding the pandemic teach us about international relations? This does not mean that each lecture is centrally concerned with the pandemic, but I will address it in every lecture. Each lecture raises a “corona question” that relates the covered material to the current situation.

Inhalt: Die politikwissenschaftliche Disziplin der Internationalen Beziehungen (IB) zeichnet sich durch eine hohe Ausdifferenzierung konkurrierender theoretischer Perspektiven aus, die für Studierende der Politikwissenschaft kaum noch zu überschauen ist. Diese Vielfalt resultiert aus ständiger Auseinandersetzung mit realhistorischen Veränderungen des internationalen Systems sowie intensiver (wissenschafts-)theoretischer Auseinandersetzung mit den und Adaption von Erkenntnissen benachbarter Disziplinen, wie der Soziologie, dem internationalen Recht, der politischen Philosophie.

Inhalt: Die politikwissenschaftliche Disziplin der Internationalen Beziehungen (IB) ist stark theoretisch orientiert. Die anerkanntesten Forscher sind primär Theoretiker, zumindest nicht reine Empiriker. Insofern gehört es zu einer soliden Ausbildung in diesem Bereich, sich mit „klassischen“ und modernen Theorie-Texten auseinanderzusetzen. In diesem Begleitseminar zur englischsprachigen Vorlesung „Introduction to International Relations“ lernen sie einige der Theorie-Texte im Original kennen, die ich in der Vorlesung nur knapp zusammenfasse. Am Ende dieses Seminars können Sie besser beurteilen, ob die IB zu theoretisch sind, wie manche behaupten.
