Inhalt: Binary thinking orders the world by false dichotomies: the truth binary oversimplifies issues as true or false; the goodness binary views things in purist terms that are composite in nature; the identification binary imposes categorial attributions on the teeming hybridity of experience. Recent debates around gender identity and differentiation reveal the comprehensive politics behind such mappings. Are men and women relevant categories of differentiation? Similar questions obtain for the human/machine and society/nature polarity. They are imposed by societal ordering and technical capture – but don’t hold up under the lived scrutiny of experience. The information and communication saturated environment we inhabit appears to both reinforce and undermine the tenability of this binary reductionism. Our collective imaginary finds itself subject to forces of fluidity hitherto only inhabited by that mythical figure of crossbred affinities: the mermaid. Mythische Kreationen und Kreaturen: Erfindungen von Mensch-Tier Hybriden in Kunst, visueller Kultur, Philosophie und doxa, vom alten Assyrien bis in die globale Gegenwart (Seminar)

Inhalt: Das Seminar widmet sich Konstruktionen von Mischwesen und kreativen Überschreitungen gängiger binärer Unterscheidungen, sei es von Mensch und Tier, sei es von Frau und Mann, welche sich von alters her in Mythologien und Religionen finden und auch in die populäre Kultur der Gegenwart (Filme, Bildwelten des Internet) Eingang gefunden haben. Die Studierenden erarbeiten sich Visualisierungen in der Bildenden Kunst und visuellen Kultur (historisch z.B. in Aby Warburgs Mnemoysne Bildatlas, oder in Albrecht Dürers Bildwelt, zeitgenössisch bei zahlreichen figurativ arbeitenden Künstler*innen von Keith Haring bis Roy Liechtenstein), aber auch ihre Behandlung in der Literatur (z.B. Motive wie Melusine, Undine, die Sirenen). Dies geschieht vor dem Hintergrund der Befassung mit vergleichender Mythologie in den Kulturwissenschaften, insbesondere Psychologie (z.B. Carl G. Jung) und Philosophie (Ernst Cassirer). Von speziellem Interesse sind die historisch variablen Konstruktionen von Weiblichkeit von ihrer Vergöttlichung bis zu ihrer Dämonisierung bzw. der Überschreitung von Geschlechtergrenzen.
