Inhalt: The term »platform capitalism« has been introduced and come to prominence recently to emphasize how what is often called the »sharing economy« has in fact very little to do with sharing or with overcoming capitalism as is often claimed. Instead, platform capitalism is characterized by a number of different platforms trying to dominate some key parts of economic activity by acting as intermediaries and infrastructure for economic exchange. These platforms rely on a data economy and forms of algorithmic management which in many ways constitute a new paradigm of economic organization associated with Silicon Valley. Platform capitalism is also a challenge for existing understandings of organization, since platforms reside uneasily between corporations and markets. For some, platforms are associated with the eclipse of the corporation, for others they are much more than markets. In this course, we will explore the history of platforms, their ‘discovery’ in economics, their relation to corporations and markets, as well as their key features and the ways in which they are impacting specific economic sectors such as cultural production. The course largely draws on organization studies and cultural political economy.
