Inhalt: We will discuss approaches and theories of the "New Materialism" paradigm from authors such as Jane Bennett, Nigel Thrift, Karen Barad, Donna Haraway, Brian Massumi, Bruno Latour, Linda Fisher and others. Why do such approaches matter? Materialisms represent a challenge to (post-)structuralist theories as they reject the universal validity of the semiotic framework - not everything is can be understood as a web of signification. What they have in common is to emphasize the particularity of non-linguistic forms of expression or articulation. Matter, infrastructures, bodies must be seen in their specific qualities that transcend the conventional logic of meaning production. To a certain extent materialisms are controversial - e.g. in the context of the relationship between body and gender. In general, they seem to threaten one of social theory’s corner stones - mutability. However, materialisms pose important questions about particularity, intensity, temporality or emergence and might contribute to develop novel solutions to classical problems of social and cultural theories.
