Popular Music, History and Heritage (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Monika Schoop

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 13:45 | 24.10.2022 - 03.02.2023 | C 16.310 Musik

Inhalt: This course addresses the intersection of popular music, history, and historiography. It focuses on two key questions: 1) How is music history written? 2) How is music employed to construct and negotiate broader historical narratives? Drawing on selected readings and examples, we will critically inspect the processes of music historiography. We will employ theoretical concepts, such as canonization and heritage, to address the following questions: Who writes music history? Who gets included? Who is left out? What are the challenges of preserving music and its artifacts? How is music used and capitalized on in tourism? We will further inquire into music’s contribution to constructing broader historical narratives. We will critically reflect on the following questions: How is music used for educational purposes? How is it employed as a tool to spread disinformation? What is music’s role in historical revisionism?

Inhalt: From Thomas Edison’s phonograph to modern instrument libraries, popular music has been inextricably linked with music technology. This seminar will explore technological advancements and the effects they had on popular music production and genre aesthetics. There will be lecture elements (theoretical, and practical demonstration) on the history of production practices in general and of particular genres like alternative rock, metal, reggae and EDM – from the 1970s to the most recent histories. Open-format, group-centred analyses and joint discussion will look at various technologies and genres based on the group’s interest and expertise. Production within this seminar is defined widely and can comprise live music (i.e. music festivals, dancehalls/sound systems).
