Critical geographies of protected area management (Vorlesung)

Dozent/in: Jacqueline Loos, Cormac Walsh

Termin:
wöchentlich | Freitag | 10:15 - 12:45 | 17.10.2022 - 03.02.2023 | C 12.010 Seminarraum | Wöchentlich + eine kurze Exkursion

Inhalt: At a time of unprecedented environmental change, nature conservation policies and practices are key to the protection of natural values, vulnerable ecosystems and treasured landscapes. Yet, ways of doing nature conservation are also changing in response to wider societal shifts and an increasing recognition of the need to incorporate cultural values, local knowledge and traditional practices with conservation strategies. Critical perspectives within human geography and the social sciences have long viewed nature conservation as a ‘spatial practice’ whereby national parks and other forms of protected areas are created to set aside spaces for nature beyond the damaging influence of modern human society. More recently, researchers and practitioners seek to find ways to engage local communities and stakeholders in nature conservation, to find a balance between resource use and protection, within a wider context of sustainable development. In this seminar, current concepts and practices of nature conservation and their geographical implications will be critically discussed. Students, working in small groups, will carry out desk-based research on case studies of nature conservation in Germany and worldwide.
