Intercultural Communicative Competence Advanced (Seminar)

Inhalt: ICC is one of the prime goals in foreign language teaching. We will discuss how ICC can be incorporated in EFL teaching at both primary and secondary level. In this seminar the aim is to deepen the already gained awareness of the impact intercultural and transcultural competence has on communication and to reflect on ways of developing it in EFL classes. To expand the understanding of the theoretical framework of the field and to train to develop and facilitate in-class and online activities with an inter-/transcultural focus are the objectives of this class. We will explore both theoretical and practical implications for constructing an ICC related methodological framework suitable for the EFL classroom and provide guidance on the application of such.
Text and Media in Context, Focus on Primary and Secondary School (Seminar)

Inhalt: In seeking to bring learners of English as a foreign language in contact with authentic culture and language, a wide variety of texts and media can be used to enrich contemporary communicative language learning, including young adult literature, graphic novels, short stories, You Tube videos, news clips, podcasts, songs, movies, and more. In the seminar, a focus will be placed on students' receptive engagement with texts and media as well as on opportunities for student text production (e.g. in e-mail or blog projects). Seminar participants will have the opportunity to develop their own lesson ideas as well as to test these ideas in microteaching sessions.
