Economic Development: Theory, Policy and Evidence (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: Why are there over 700 million people living in extreme poverty, i.e. on less than US$ 1.90 per day, and 770 million people without access to electricity? How is it that the countries of this world have developed so differently over time? In this course, we will use and further develop the analytical and methodological skills that you have acquired in economics to answer these questions – and many more. The course will focus on selected topics from microeconomics, macroeconomics and political economy, with a certain bias towards institutional analysis and sustainability issues. Each lecture will provide the necessary theory to understand the topic, methods and some empirical findings on the matter, a discussion of development policies and some background information about intellectual history. Moreover, the lectures will provide information on how to explore selected issues in greater depth.
