Inhalt: The seminar aims to provide students with theories and concepts to critically examine the modulation and management of spaces of aesthetic capitalism. The students are asked to conduct fieldwork-based analysis of aesthetic and atmospheric spaces, their constitution and consequences. Aesthetic capitalism has recently developed as a way to address the enhanced aesthetization of everyday life. In line with notions of the ‘experience economy’, aesthetic capitalism puts attention on the promotion of aesthetic experiences that permeate everyday life, making the economy submit to a logic of aesthetic value creation. Huge efforts are put into ‘being sensed’: into how spaces are seen, heard, smelled, tasted and touched. Contemporary culture is increasingly subject to atmospheric engineering. Consider, for instance, the atmospheric design and modulation of spaces such as shopping malls, sports events, innovation labs as well as urban design practices. Creating atmospheric spaces is supposed to foster creativity and improve human relations by way of organizing sense experience. Yet such spaces also accentuate the power of affective manipulation and the difficulties of critique and resistance. Investigating spaces of aesthetic capitalism therefore articulates the configuration of social realities through sense experiences as a major force and how they have become central in the cultural-economic development of society. This seminar is dedicated to both understanding and exploring these developments. Its aim is to conceptually and methodologically equip the students with a basic understanding of ‘aesthetic capitalism’ as first and foremost an embodied and atmospheric phenomenon that is spatially manifested. Moreover, students are asked to venture out into specific sites and explore the design of atmospheric experience themselves, conducting sensory fieldwork and enacting their own stories of atmospheric modulation. Studying the atmospheric can be done through, for instance, interviews, observations, pictures, sound recordings and video-takes, drawings and maps, reports and articles. The empirical work will then be transformed into presentations of how spaces of aesthetic capitalism can be sensed, how its atmospheres organize everyday life, and how such atmospherics become a technology of power as well as resistance.
