Inhalt: The seminar is designed to deepen the students’ knowledge of public international law. The focus is on current international law issues from an economic perspective – especially in the fields of international human rights law and international environmental law. First, basic actors and organizations of international law relevant for the seminar will be presented and discussed. This includes the United Nations (UN), The World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Law Commission (ILC). Second, international human rights law will discussed in detail as the seminar’s main focus. For this purpose, the UN human rights system and the regional human rights systems will be discussed. After having acquired general knowledge of international human rights law, emphasis is placed on specific economic aspects of international human rights law. The first focus will be on human rights violations by corporations and businesses. Here, inter alia, the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights are relevant. The question of the extent to which corporations and businesses are bound by international human rights law and whether and how they can be held accountable for human rights violations will be discussed. In this context, the possible role of international criminal law in human rights violations by corporations and businesses will also be discussed. The second focus in terms of international human rights law is on economic rights, such as the right to work and the right to form a union. Finally, the seminar will offer an introduction to international environmental law. The focus of this section will be on the interactions between international environmental law with international economic law.
