Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 5.325 Seminarraum
Einzeltermin | Mi, 15.05.2024, 08:15 - Mi, 15.05.2024, 09:45 | C 14.001 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Children's literature has, since its beginnings in the 18th century, been a source both of entertainment and instruction for child readers as well as a product which reflects adults' perceptions of children and the choices that they make regarding what literature is suitable for the young. It is addressed to a wide range of readers from pre-literate toddlers to young adults and encompasses an equally wide range of genres including picturebooks, traditional folk and fairy tales, novels, poetry, and informational books. In this seminar, you will become familiar with a selection of literature in the English-speaking cultures across time, and learn to appreciate this branch of literature through close reading and work with different critical approaches. You will examine the distinctive qualities of children’s literature, explore the relation of didacticism and entertainment in texts for children at different historical periods, and consider the changing concepts of the child and its influence on the production of children's literature.

Jane Austen on the Screen (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Emer O'Sullivan

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 5.325 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Jane Austen (1775-1817), author of six novels renowned for their irony and humour, their depiction of contemporary English social life and also for their underlying serious qualities, would seem an unlikely candidate for the title “hippest pop writer to go to Hollywood”. But this is what she was called after six films of her novels appeared between 1995 and 1997 alone. Altogether some 40 film and tv mini-series adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, biopics and Jane Austen-themed stories have been made in Hollywood, Bollywood, by the BBC and others. In this seminar we will examine Austen’s novels in context before moving to film and tv adaptions, focussing especially on "Pride and Prejudice", exploring the reasons for the striking and sudden appeal of Austen and her work during and since the mid-1990s and examining different adaptation strategies and foci.

Shakespeare's "Hamlet": Exploring a Popular Classic (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Ulrike Kristina Köhler

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 5.311 Seminarraum

Inhalt: The tragedy Hamlet by William Shakespeare belongs to the most studied and most staged English plays around the world. Since its first performance around 1600, this play has become an almost all-time box office hit, and it is part of the curriculum at many secondary schools. In this seminar, we will examine Hamlet in detail and with different foci. These include the play's themes, its language and rhetoric, and its literary and cultural context as well as the aspect of performance. Therefore, we will also watch a screen production. While including aspects of current research in our discussion, our key methodological approach is a close reading one and the recital in class. RECOMMENDED EDITION: Miola, Robert S. (ed).
