Inhalt: Security is a key concept of international politics, describing something we reasonably think is at stake when gender-based violence, poverty or armed conflict occurs. But is Security a concept at stake during global heating and if so, what, if anything, does this clarify regarding the concept’s intension? This course covers different schools of Critical Security Studies such as the Copenhagen, Welsh or French Schools of Security Studies. Scholars of these schools argue for different understandings of what exactly security refers to. Most of them often question, though not commonly do away with, state- and military-centric concepts. This seminar current affairs next to theoretical work on security. Students will be asked to argue with reference to respective literature that security is as a politics of states, a politics of people, a concept negating privacy or similar. The seminar centres an emancipatory understanding of Security. This reading intensive course will usually require some pre-existing knowledge of either IR or political theory. For the weekend-long course to work well, a piece of independent work must be submitted a week prior to the weekend at which the seminar takes place

Global Political Economy / Globale Politische Ökonomie - The Analysis of Power and Wealth Across the Ages (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Lukas Hakelberg

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.102 Seminarraum

Inhalt: The seminar provides a profound introduction to Global Political Economy (GPE). GPE is concerned with the interplay of power and wealth at the global – and between the global, regional, and domestic – levels. The field is theoretically and methodologically diverse and problem oriented. That is, scholars within the field draw on a wide range of epistemological and ontological assumptions to analyze how the world economy, including global systems of trade, finance, and production shape politics and vice versa. They are, for instance, concerned with the power relationships underpinning global patterns of trade and production, the determinants of foreign direct investment, the effect of globalization and financial crises on political behavior, or the consequences of offshore banking for inequality and the sovereignty of nation-states. The seminar’s goals are to familiarize students with the inspiring theoretical debates within the field of GPE, provide them with a deep understanding of how changing power configurations have historically shaped the world economy, and enable them to draw on insights from GPE to make sense of current affairs. To this end, the seminar is structured in three parts. The first part presents the field of GPE, its contemporary intellectual diversity, and its core topics. The second part applies GPE’s theoretical and methodological toolbox to analyze the world economy’s historical evolution from the 14th to the 21st century. The third part then showcases how GPE helps us understand the rise of populism, geopolitical instability, as well as government responses to the climate crisis.
