Inhalt: GENERAL PROCEDURE: This is a course on the application of economic knowledge and reasoning. The aim is to comprehensibly analyse and deal with economic and socio-political questions of our time by means of economic methods and tools. For this purpose, economic models are discussed and their underlying assumptions are critically examined. The outcome of this exercise is a written paper to be presented during the seminar. COURSE STRUCTURE: At the beginning of the semester, the topic allocation is determined in consultation between the instructor and the students. A first draft of the written work is to be submitted after four weeks. After a first feedback by the lecturer, the students still have time to improve the content of the paper. In mid-July, the seminar takes place over three days in block form. In there, each participant presents his or her own work and, as a discussant, also gives a brief assessment of another student's work. Along the general discussion with fellow students, different points of view on the topic are to be worked out and compared with each other. In doing so, the economic policy issues addressed can be analysed from different perspectives. The student performance to be achieved consists in the preparation and writing of a seminar paper, in the presentation of the own work and in the active participation during the block seminar. The minor additional reading requirements need to be fulfilled too. REQUIREMENTS: Essays should be approximately 8,000-12,000 characters (including spaces) in length. An initial draft must be submitted via email four weeks after the topic has been assigned. The final version must be received no later than 16.6.2023 (final date may differ slightly). Final versions will be made available to all participants by sharing them as material on myStudy. All participants are expected to have read the papers by the fellow students by the last day of the course in order to be able to substantively discuss and learn from each other.
