Data Demands: On New Storytelling Practices of Old Data Regimes.

Data and stories have long had a productive symbiotic relationship. Literary critics have, for some time now, pointed out the subsumption of narratives under databases, while more recently, data storytelling has emerged as a growing subdiscipline. This talk opens with the assumption that practices of storytelling with/in data vary across time and space. With episodes from predictive policing systems in the US, and datasets used in data science pedagogy, Ranjodh Singh Dhaliwal outlines why data and stories are originarily entangled, and why data must be considered via its narrative-ladenness. Drawing from media studies, STS, and histories of data and narratology, the talk endeavours to understand why and when which data comes to need or demand what stories.
