Panel discussion: Dealing with the colonial legacy

06. Dec

Lüneburg. On 6 December 2023, Leuphana University Lüneburg will host a panel discussion entitled "From the context of injustice to cooperation? Dealing with colonial heritage". The director of the Stade Museums, Dr Sebastian Möllers, will take part in the discussion. He will report on a provenance research project focussing on the Karl Braun collection. The botanist worked at the Amani Institute in what was then German East Africa, now Tanzania, from 1904 to 1920 and brought back an extensive collection of everyday objects, weapons, instruments and textiles when he returned from Africa. Shortly before his death, he donated them to the city of Stade.

Dr Sebastian Möllers is convinced that Braun acquired the objects through purchases and donations - "in a colonial context of injustice". He will discuss the question of how such a collection should be dealt with today with his colleague, the director of the Museum Lüneburg, Prof. Dr Heike Düselder, the art historian Prof. Dr Susanne Leeb from Leuphana and Dyoniz Kindata from Tanzania, who researches post-colonial studies at Leuphana, among other things. The discussion will be moderated by Privatdozent Dr Thomas Kück from the Institute of Ethics and Theology.

The event begins at 3.30 pm in Lecture Hall 4 at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Campus Universitätsallee 1.
