Anyone who says that there are only two biological sexes is quickly suspected of hate speech against transgender and intersex people. However, the current biological definition based on the two gametes, egg cells and sperm, remains valid.

Throughout the Western world, there has been a social debate about gender issues. Some advocate for replacing the existing biological definition with other models that view transgender and intersex people not as exception, but as part of the norm. Beyond scientific questions of definition, there have been developments in society that promote the increasingly widespread inclusion of trans and intersex people in various areas. This includes areas that were previously restricted on the basis of biological sex.

As a result, there have been increasing conflicts, particularly with biological women, as they are now confronted with biological men in sensitive areas. In competitive sports, it has become apparent that the inclusion of biologically male individuals has failed, and many associations are once again imposing clear restrictions. There are also many contentious issues beyond sports: Who is allowed to be in a women's prison? Should spaces exist at all that have biological female gender as an access criterion?

The lecture will outline how these conflicts arose.
