In 1945, the great powers were granted special rights and privileges in return for bearing a heavier responsibility for international peace and security. The wars in Ukraine and Gaza reveal that the division of roles established in 1945 is once again not being honoured.
Professor Arnulf Becker Lorca (European University Institute) joins a conversation with Dr. Angar Verma (Leuphana University) to ask whether a collective withdrawal from the United Nations offers a response when the great powers fail to fulfil their responsibilities. He explores the legality as well as the tactical value of such a step – not to reject international cooperation, but to reclaim the promises of 1945.
