Mourning for honorary doctor Jürgen Basedow

2023-04-13 Lüneburg. On April 6, 2023, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Jürgen Basedow LL.M. (Harvard University) passed away. The legal scholar was director of the Max Planck Institute for Private Law in Hamburg from 1997 to 2017.

In 2012, the then Faculty of Business and Economics at Leuphana University Lüneburg awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his comprehensive basic legal research with which he shaped the academic discourse in key business-oriented areas of law. His works on international legal issues and fundamental topics have been reviewed by numerous experts and published in various languages.

Through his work, Basedow had contributed greatly to the interdisciplinary determination of the functioning of competition, its prerequisites and limits, and thus positively influenced events in many markets, especially in the transport and insurance markets.

His legal dogmatic clarity was combined with the ability to enter into discourse with lawyers and economists alike, so that he transcended disciplinary boundaries and also became an economic expert.

Leuphana will honor the memory of Jürgen Basedow, who actively supported the development and expansion of legal studies at our university. Our compassion as a university community goes out to his family, relatives and friends.
