LCCS supports the Leuphana Opening Week 2026 on IN::SECURITY

2026-10-30

This year, the Opening Week week for first-year students at Leuphana focused on the topic “IN::SECURITY,” addressing the tension between insecurity and security in various areas of life: climate change, international conflicts, economic security, work, and housing—and not least the impact of artificial intelligence. The Leuphana Center for Cooperative Security (LCCS), founded just this year, will address security issues across this broad spectrum and therefore supported the orientation week.

This included four “Focus Interviews”, one of which was conducted by Prof. Dr. Tobias Lenz, interim director of the LCCS, with Prof. Dr. Ursula Schröder, director of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH). The discussion, held in Leuphana’s Audimax, focused on the current unstable security situation in Europe, possible ways out of this situation, and alternative scenarios for the future. The important role of sustainability research for security in the areas of climate and energy was emphasized, as was the connection between security and an active, democratic civil society. Afterward, students had the opportunity to ask questions. In closing, Ursula Schröder encouraged the students to get actively involved, including through volunteer work. She noted that volunteerism is an essential pillar of security in a democratic society.
