SRM - Responsible Organizing in Times of Crisis and Beyond (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Hannah Trittin-Ulbrich
Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.010 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Responsible Organizing in Times of Crisis and Beyond: The Case of War and Armed Conflict The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has caused a deep crisis for individuals, organizations and global institutions. As the crisis unfolds, many questions arise that are specifically relevant to management and organization scholars and practitioners. How do firms and leaders make sense and respond to war and armed conflict? What is the role of organizations and leadership in war and conflict? To what extent do organizations such as global supply chains exploit and even drive armed conflict? How do various organizations such as digital platforms or hacker collectives actively participate in warfare? How can organizations as well as supply chains be made reliable and resilient against disruptions caused by war and armed conflict? How are peace efforts and war relief organized by various collective actors, ranging from public administrations and corporations to civil society organizations? More generally, what are corporate responsibilities in war? This course comprises a set of classes, each dealing with a particular aspect of war and disruption in relation to different management functions and forms of organizing. It is a collaborative effort of organizational scholars from different universities that have expertise in researching different aspects of management and organizations that are relevant to times of war and armed conflict. Each class comprises a short recorded lecture and a set of core and background readings in addition to links to contemporary newspaper articles. Change Agents for Sustainability (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Hannah Trittin-Ulbrich
Termin:
14-täglich | Montag | 08:15 - 11:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.101 Seminarraum
Inhalt: This seminar will focus on the specific role that change agents play for organizational change towards sustainability. Creating a company that operates in line with planetary boundaries (Rockström et al., 2009) and that contributes to meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2015) requires fundamental organizational transformations, including entrepreneurial contributions to transforming markets and society (e.g. Johnson & Schaltegger, 2020). Such transformations, however, do not happen by themselves (Schaltegger et al., 2016). It is often individual managers and employees within a company – so-called ‘change agents for sustainability – who play a vital role in advancing corporate sustainability, as they are responsible for starting initiatives, making decisions and implementing measures. Indeed, recent contributions have started to focus on the transformational role of individual corporate sustainability professionals and other zealous employees in shaping strategic decisions around social and environmental issues in organizations from the inside out (Gond & Moser, 2021; Girschik et al., 2020). Change agents for sustainability can unfold their activities at all levels and places in an organization (Acquier, et al., 2011). Most companies have formalized roles for corporate sustainability professionals (including CSR, EHS, and CR managers) in one form or another (Beckmann et al., 2020). Besides corporate sustainability professionals, CEOs and top managers (Sturdivant, 1979), other corporate agents such as local heroes or champions (Andersson & Bateman, 2000; Walley & Stubbs, 1999), middle and functional managers or engaged employees may play a crucial role in the transformation of their organization (Hemingway & Maclagan, 2004; Nielsen & Thomsen, 2009; Sharma & Good, 2013). Their activities usually include proposing, pursuing and implementing sustainability projects and activities and ensuring the overall improvement of corporate sustainability performance. Besides, change agents for sustainability often act as key entrepreneurial actors (intrapreneurs) or as activists inside the company who guide and push for organizational sustainability transformation (e.g. Carollo & Guerci, 2018; Wickert & de Bakker, 2018), possibly also bottom-up in the organization (Brinkhurst et al., 2011).

Exploring the social construction of sustainability through qualitative research methods (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Hannah Trittin-Ulbrich
Termin:
14-täglich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 11:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.010 Seminarraum
Inhalt: In this course, students will learn to apply qualitative research methods in a research project on social media content creators ('influencers'). The course will provide theoretical foundations on these methods, but will particularly focus on the application of qualitative research methods. Students will be tasked to study how social media content creators ('influencers') promote and advertise sustainable products and services. As opinion-leaders, influencers are important actors in the construction of messages about sustainability in society. In this project, we aim to investigate what narratives, visuals, or emotions influencers use to promote sustainable products and services, and critically assess the implications of such digital entrepreneurship for societal understandings of sustainability. Based on the collection and analysis of online data through netnographic observations and interviews, students will investigate the production of visuals, artifacts, and emotions that convey sustainability messages. Students will then engage in group work and work on their own research projects. The course focuses on the practical aspects of designing a research project, assessing research sites, the data collection and analysis process.
