Digital Narratives (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this seminar, we explore the way digital media is changing our idea of narrative. Students will create audio-visual projects that interrogate linearity, identification and community. Discussions will focus on how digital media becomes a tool for seeing and exploring the social world. By analysing new modes of storytelling, including database cinema and interactive artworks, we will better understand how the digital changes our relationship to both memory and time.

Filme von unterwegs - Das Road Movie (Seminar)

Inhalt: Das Sich-auf-den-Weg machen ist der Initialpunkt des Road Movies. »Ich bin da.«, ist der erste Satz von Mona in Agnès Vardas Film »Vogelfrei« und damit setzt sich das Filmbild weiter in Bewegung und die Kamera läuft hinterher, hockt auf dem Beifahrersitz, schaut aus Zugfenstern (»Darjeeling Limited«), oder verspiegelt sich halluzinierend in der Wüste Nevadas (»Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas«) und taumelt ziellos ohne Rast und Ruh nach New Orleans zum Mardi-Gras (»Easy Rider«), um schließlich ein letzter Zeuge zu sein (»Into the Wild«): »Das Road Movie erzählt davon unterwegs zu sein, ohne anzukommen.« (Oliver Fahle 2003) Eine Sonderveranstaltung für das Seminar am 21. April 16 lädt die Filmkritiker Elena Meilicke (Cargo, Perlentaucher), Ekkehard Knörer (Cargo, Merkur) und Michael Baute (Cargo, newfilmkritik.de) ins Scala-Kino ein, um den Film »Vogelfrei« zu diskutieren und die im Wintersemester 15/16 dazu von den Studierenden der Leuphana gedrehten Videoessays zu sehen und die geschriebenen Texte zu hören. Neben zahlreichen Filmen untersucht das Seminar jedoch auch die eigene Distanz zum Schreiben und wie das Reisen an unseren Gedanken zu Filmen arbeitet. Geplant ist eine Exkursion zum Sarajevo Film Festival, das vom 12.-20. August stattfindet. Die realistische Planung dazu erfolgt gemeinsam in der ersten Seminarstunde. http://www.sff.ba/en

Klassische Positionen kulturwissenschaftlicher Spieltheorie (Seminar)

Inhalt: Spiel ist ebenso rätselhaft wie allgegenwärtig. Oft wurde die immense Bedeutung des Spiels für die Entwicklung des Menschen betont und dessen kulturstiftende Kraft analysiert ("Homo Ludens"), jedoch scheint sich das Phänomen selbst eindeutiger Definitions- und theoretischer Domestizierungsversuche hartnäckig zu entziehen. Anhand klassischer Texte kulturwissenschaftlich-philosophisch orientierter Spieltheorie von Freud bis Derrida werden wir uns auf eine Entdeckungsreise durch zahlreiche Aspekte des Phänomens Spiel begeben.

Framing Uncertainty: Perspektiven der Computerspielforschung (Seminar)

Inhalt: In den letzten 10-15 Jahren hat sich die Computerspielforschung (auch game studies genannt) sowohl international als auch in Deutschland zu einem boomenden Forschungsfeld entwickelt. Die kulturtheoretisch-medienwissenschaftliche Reflexion auf dieses Medium ist allerdings noch ein Desiderat. Allzusehr wird die Computerspielforschung international noch vor allem im Hinblick auf die Erfordernisse der Ausbildung von Gamedesignern betrieben oder von medienpädagogischen oder soziologischen Zugängen dominiert. Dieses Seminar wird demgegenüber anhand neuerer Texte zum Computerspiel das Spektrum geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschungsperspektiven abschreiten.

Inhalt: The Criminal Object: A Cultural analysis of media forms Let’s begin with a basic fact: If you are reading this course description online, whether you like it or not, you are a criminal. Like almost everybody online, you have pirated information, downloaded copyrighted material, accessed unauthorized Internet, used hacked software, bought jail-broken electronics, stored banned content, and consumed cultural products that might be in the grey zone of moral acceptance and legal existence. Being criminal seems to be a precondition of being digital. And yet, surprisingly, if asked, we would not think of criminality as a condition of our being. The Criminal Object is a seminar that explores the ways by which these conditions of criminality get formed, informed and formulated in contemporary cultural theory and the political aspirations and implications therein. Dislocating the focus on content, style, meaning and interpretation in Humanities and Cultural Studies, the seminar concentrates on the means, methods, and modes of production of cultural objects to unravel how the book that we read, or the message that we tweet makes us into potentially criminals. The seminar argues that Cultural Objects are often celebrated as expressions of creative, individual genius, concentrating on the art, craft and technique that go into cultural production. New experiments in culture industries are characterized through positive attributes like innovation and evolution. However, a cultural analysis of the media forms tells us a different story – a story of contestation, regulation, conflict, and criminalization. For every media form that survives, there are many others that are made to die. The dominant cultural expressions, and especially their proliferation through new media of digital distribution often hides the fact that there is a huge infrastructure of censorship, control and containment that is in the service of foreclosing possibilities of creating cultural commons.

Web Video (Seminar)

Inhalt: Web videos have established themselves as one of the main features of Internet usage. The course will explore the aesthetic and cultural forms of web videos, as well as their technological and economic conditions. In doing so, the course draws mainly of classical text in cultural, media, film and social analysis or theory.
