Einführung in deine Doktorarbeit (Seminar)

Inhalt: The focus of this course is to get people to think how to cope with a PhD. Devoting typically no less than three years to a research topic is a great opportunity, yet many people face challenges and obstacles on the way. Within this course, we hence on the first day outline how a PhD is embedded into the Faculty, Leuphana, and Universities in general. This serves as a baseline for reflection where you are in the institution, and how you relate to the governmental structures and complex management of Leuphana. On the second day the focus will be shifted on the individual PhD students, outlining what can be gained from your own individual PhD, and how you can manage the long and winding work you face. Finally, the challenges of PhD students will be discussed and jointly we will work on potential solutions or remedies for the obstacles many PhD students face.

Inhalt: Im Seminar werden konzeptionelle und methodische Fragen zu transdisziplinärer, transformativer und Transformationsforschung behandelt. Dazu gehören auch die Besonderheiten sogenannter neuer Formate wie Reallabore, Innovationsgruppen etc. Das Seminar wird in einem Wechsel von Präsentation/Input und Übungen in Gruppen stattfinden.

Inhalt: Positioning yourself for an academic career requires publishing in international, peer-reviewed journals. This block course is intended to help you develop the skills to prepare an article for an international journal. There will be a mixture of activities, including a minimum of ‘lecturing’, but mostly a range of interactive exercises. Some of the themes covered will include (i) structuring a paper, (ii) structuring a paragraph, (iii) writing concise sentences, (iv) matching word count and content, (v) writing an informative abstract, (vi) writing a cover letter to a journal, and (vii) dealing with revisions and rejections. The course is offered in two sessions of two and three days respectively. The sessions are placed a few days apart to give students the opportunity to improve a piece of their writing (which they are working on anyway) in the break between sessions, on the basis of what they have learnt in the first session. The course will draw on examples from the natural sciences and social sciences, with an emphasis on sustainability-related topics. However, similar writing principles apply to other disciplines, and students from all faculties are encouraged to apply. All communication related to the course will be in English.
