Termin:
wöchentlich | Montag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 08.04.2019 - 01.07.2019 | C 16.310 Musik

Inhalt: This course gives an introduction to the rapidly growing field of research on popular music and cultural memory. The unit is divided into three parts. Building on this foundation, the second part explores a diverse range of case studies from the fields of popular music studies, ethnomusicology, sociology, sound studies, media and memory studies. Attention will be paid to popular music as a medium of memory, asking how popular music serves as a vehicle for the construction and negotiation of (individual and collective) memories, and popular music as an object of memory, inquiring into how popular music artists, scenes and events are being remembered. Individual studies will highlight music's sonic, textual and performative character, as well as its material dimensions, inquiring into how music-related places objects, texts, and technological artefacts become inscribed with memory. In the final section of the course, students will apply the acquired knowledge to a local example of their choice and present their findings in class.
