History and Epistemology of Computing part I - Stream A (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this course you get an overview of the history of computing and digital media. We looks at key events, actors, machines, discourses, epistemological shifts, social and economic forces and societal changes. This will allow you (1) to understand, how computers and digital media became what they are, (2) explore critical perspectives on the shape they took, and (3) open up ideas how they could be different. This is the first of a two-part seminar for a 10CP module - assessment will be in the next semester in part II, taking the form of a 12-15 page long paper.

Netzwerk und RELAIS: Epistemologie der Netze und Netzwerke (Seminar)

Inhalt: Moderne Informationsübertragungen bauen auf Relais, also auf Schalter. Durch sie wird der Arbeitskreislauf vom Informationskreislauf getrennt; durch sie emanzipiert sich die Übertragung von Information allererst von der Kraftübertragung und gewinnt auf diese Weise die Schnelligkeit und Ubiquität, die moderne Netzwerke auszeichnet. Das Seminar versucht anhand von Bernhard Siegerts "Relais. Geschicke der Literatur als Epoche der Post. 1751-1913" die Vor- und Frühgeschichte dieser Entwicklung nachzuzeichnen. Dabei geht es nicht nur um technischen Entwicklungen selbst, sondern um ihren historischen, gesellschaftspolitischen Kontext, sowie um die technisch induzierten Veränderung des Inhalt der Sendungen, die durch jene Netzwerke geschleust werden.
NETZWERK und Relais: Kulturgeschichte der Netze und Netzwerke (Seminar)

Inhalt: Die Geschichte und Epistemologie Digitaler Medien ist die Geschichte technischer Vernetzung. Von den ersten Kanalisationssystemen über Eisenbahn, Telegrafie, Telefon bis zum "Internet der Dinge“ stellen Netzwerke den Versuch dar, „die Unwahrscheinlichkeit von Unordnung zu minimieren“ (Hartmut Böhme). Sie bestimmen über Ein- bzw. Ausschlüsse, darüber wer „Zugang“ zu digitalen Kulturen hat und wer nicht. Netzwerke beruhen dabei einerseits auf Kulturtechniken des Verknüpfens, Verschalten und Herstellens von Beziehungen. Andererseits sind Netzwerke Medien, insofern sie als Produkte dieser Kulturtechniken dynamische Systeme darstellen, die Informations- und Kommunikationsflüsse regulieren und formatieren.
