Inhalt: Doing experiments in ecology and environmental sciences well is an art that needs to be learned. There are good and bad ways to perform experiments. One can either bumble ones way through, without considering key aspects of experimental design and analysis or one can learn and internalize the key factors that ensure your experiment has the best chances of success in terms of results and impact. If you want to learn the key tools and characteristics of the successful design and analysis of experiments this is the course for you. The course includes lectures and practical work in groups. During the lectures, numerous examples coming from real ecological experiments will be used to illustrate the key factors that must be considered when designing an experiment in ecology. In addition, students will work in groups of 4-5 people to set up an experiment related to plant ecology. One of the seminar will be dedicated to the exploration and analysis of the data acquired by the students themselves.

Inhalt: Der Philosoph und Agrarsoziologe Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) hat mit seinem Ansatz der „Produktion des Raumes“ einen bedeutenden Beitrag zum „spatial turm“ geleistet. Im Seminar wird es darum gehen, das gesellschaftsbasierte Raumverständnis Lefebvres kennenzulernen und davon ausgehend kritische Positionierungen zu einem Verständnis von Raum als Behälter (Containerraum) erarbeiten. Neben der Beschäftigung mit Lefebvres zentralen raumtheoretischen Annahmen setzen wir uns mit Anwendungen und Erweiterungen seiner Arbeiten auseinander. Zentral ist dabei Lefebvres Forderung auf ein „Recht auf Stadt“, die in ihrer aktuellen Rezeption diskutiert und im Rahmen einer eintägigen Exkursion nach Hamburg am 28. Mai 2019 exemplarisch erkundet wird.
Gender Planning - (De)Konstruktion von Raum und Geschlecht (Seminar)

Inhalt: IIm Seminar beschäftigen wir uns mit der Frage, was es in theoretischer sowie praktischer Hinsicht bedeutet, Gender- und Diversityaspekte in die Planung einzubeziehen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Konzept Gender Planning. Der Ansatz sieht vor, in allen Phasen des Planungs- und Projektierungsprozesses, unterschiedliche Raumnutzungsansprüche, Ressourcen und Kompetenzen von Akteuren im Blick zu halten. Dazu gehört auch, die Aneignungs- und Raumnutzungsmuster von Frauen und Männern sowie verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Gruppen zu berücksichtigen. Ausgehend von unterschiedlichen Beispielen für gender- und diversity-orientierte Planungen, fragen wir danach, inwiefern Gender Planning zu einer (De)Konstruktion der Kategorien Raum und Geschlecht beiträgt.
Spatial analysis of sustainability challenges using GIS (Seminar)

Inhalt: Sustainability challenges often require analysis and knowledge of spatial data like land-use or pattern of infrastructure. GIS tools offer both mapping and data analysis options and are widely used in science and application. In this course you will get to know ArcGIS, the programme we use at University and QGIS, a free software. You will learn the basics these programs have to offer and develop your own small project.
