The Question of the Animal (Seminar)

Inhalt: What distinguishes (if anything) humans from other animals? How should we as humans treat other animals? In what ways might our thinking about and ways of being with other animals touch upon our thinking about and ways of being with other (human) people? In this course we will be exploring “the question of the animal” with the help of works drawn from a number of authors and academic disciplines, including from philosophy, religious studies, and literary theory. We will be seeking insight into the various issues which animate the interdisciplinary field of (critical) animal studies and attempt to disclose something of the role that animals play in the construction of central categories and concepts in contemporary culture using “animals” as a hermeneutical lens to test the limits of “humanity,” “reason,” “language,” “design,” etc., and evaluate the viability of certain theories of difference, otherness, and power.

Inhalt: Wir leben in Zeiten, die sich schwer tun, gesellschaftliche Utopien zu entwerfen, um so mehr Dystopien beherrschen die öffentliche Diskussion. Da ist es an der Zeit, den Begriff Utopie historisch und philosophisch zu klären und eine Übersicht über die Geschichte der Sozialutopien seit Thomas Morus(1516) zu geben.
