Inhalt: This course will introduce students to some of the "classics" of western philosophy. It will do it through a double reading. We will be introduced to the history of philosophy and to some major topics in philosophy through the reading and the interpretation given of it by one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century: Gilles Deleuze. Strictly speaking, this course will not be an introduction to Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy. We will only read his works focusing on the history of philosophy, in order to get an introduction to the major philosophical theories found in the history of Western philosophy. In this way we will pay special attention to theories and philosophical practices that have exerted considerable influence on contemporary thought. Through reading, lecture, discussion, and presentations you'll get to know some of philosophy's major divisions, including epistemology, metaphysics, aesthetics, ethics, and politics. By the same token you will be introduced to a way of philosophizing that involves a deconstruction of the Western philosophy. The main focus will be on authors such as Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, and Nietzsche. The tradition of empiricism (David Hume) and of Bergsonism will also be considered. The weekly regular hours scheduled on Wednesday from 12:15 to 13:45 will also be supplemented by a two-hours exercise-course, which will take place every two-weeks in the evening from 18:15 to 19:45 and will be devoted to a close reading of the work What is Philosophy by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari.
