Corporate Digital Responsibility (Seminar)

Inhalt: This seminar will make students familiar with the emerging debate on "corporate digital responsibility" (CDR). In recent years, CDR has emerged as an umbrella term for the debate around responsible management of the digital transformation. In this seminar, we will first explore theories and concepts related to the term, and how businesses attempt to live up to societal expectations in the digital age! Then, students will develop creative, practical solutions for practical challenges along the CDR challenge 2023. The course will combine lectures with interactive formats, group work and guest lectures.

Inhalt: Content: This course focuses on global supply chains as a key area for sustainable and responsible management. Global supply chains are implicated in some of the key grand challenges of our time including sustainable energy or food production or decent work and inequality. Global supply chains also play a key role in sustainable development. This course will focus in particular on multi-national corporations (MNCs), but also other stakeholders involved in making global supply chains more sustainable. After a basic introduction into what responsible management means for MNCs, the course will outline the structure of global supply chains and introduce different actors – business leaders, but also institutional and social entrepreneurs from different organizations – on different levels and the role in and possibilities for making global supply chains more sustainable. Professional competence: The students • have understood why MNCs and their business leaders feel pressure from various sides to act responsibly • have experienced both the challenges of managing global supply chains responsibly as well as the opportunities they can provide for addressing grand challenges • have understood the importance of specific contexts and contextual influences as well as the different stakeholders in global supply chains • become familiar with theories of social change and transformation as well as of barriers to change • understand which actors, from which backgrounds and operating in which contexts (e.g. workers, consumers, trade unions, business leaders, NGOs, governments,…) can contribute to more responsible global supply chains • develop own leadership skills and competencies within the context of a globalized economy Personal competence: The students • reflect about their own role as a student of international business administration and future practitioner in leading towards responsible management • learn how to reason beyond current developments—envisioning and criti¬cally exploring possi¬ble futures of sustainable production and consumption, also as a basis for assessing their own entrepreneurial ventures and career choices • practice acquiring knowledge from a variety of sources, ranging from most advanced scholarly literature to specifically applied practitioner debates, and learn how to critically reflect and creatively recombine this knowledge to responsibly form and advocate their own opinion. Teaching and learning formats Preparation and follow-up of the seminar based on literature, group work, individual exercises, research, literature based research The course mixes self-study, specifically reading and writing before class, short lectures, student presentations, and joint discussion of articles and empirical examples in class. Students are expected to arrive well prepared at each session to enable an interactive mode of learning.
