Inhalt: Hegels „Phänomenologie des Geistes“ (1807) gilt als eines der Schlüsselwerke der Philosophiegeschichte. In der Einleitung stellt Hegel die für ihn charakteristische dialektische Methode vor. Im weiteren Verlauf des Buches beschreibt er den Selbstreflexionsprozess des Geistes: von der einfachen Wahrnehmung über das Bewusstsein und das Selbstbewusstsein zur Vernunft, zum Geist und zur Geschichte. Erkenntnistheoretische Auseinandersetzungen gehen dabei kunstvoll in ethische, politische (zum Beispiel im berühmten Kapitel über „Herrschaft und Knechtschaft“) und geschichtsphilosophische Überlegungen über. Hegels „Phänomenologie des Geistes“ gilt allerdings nicht nur als eines der zentralen und beeindruckendsten Werke der Philosophiegeschichte, sondern auch als ein besonders schwieriges. Im Seminar werden wir daher nicht das gesamte Buch, sondern ausgewählte Stellen diskutieren und mithilfe von Sekundärliteratur interpretieren.

Questioning the Anthropos: Hum/Animal/Environmental Issues (Seminar)

Inhalt: The popularization of the term "Anthropocene" to designate our current epoch of socio-ecological crisis offers the possibility to critically investigate the notion(s) of the Anthropos (Human) with the conceptual toolkit of cultural philosophy. In particular, the seminar will unravel the problematic of Anthropos following three - intertwined - lines of analysis: 1. The construction of the Anthropos by means of dualism with "non-paradigmatic" humans, on the line of racism (Sylvya Winter, W.E.B. Du Bois) 2. The construction of the Anthropos by means of dualism with animals, on the line of speciesism (Agamben) 3. The construction of the Anthropos by means of dualism with nature, on the line of anthropocentrism (Haraway, de La Cadena) Particular relevance will be given to the role that technology (and thus the philosophy of technology) plays in these dualisms. Finally, these lines of analysis will be wrapped around the stance of philosophical anti-humanism as a more promising point of departure to addressing important contemporary issues, both theoretically and politically.
