wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 07.11.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 5.019 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this course we want to find out what an English teacher needs to cope with the many different classes in this special German school called 'Berufsbildende Schule'. It may sound strange but this process is a very individual one on the one hand and at the same time supported by a clear frame work in which you should be able to move (methods / techniques). The individual side of becoming a language teacher is to find out what kind of teacher you are – this is the approach you choose to take (for Berufsschule it may be necassary to work with different approaches to do the job accordingly). This doesn’t happen over night or during your BA-studies here or after you will have finished your Master but up till then this picture of what kind of teacher you are should be turning from blurred to an almost focused one (Portfolio). This is one important long term aim of university: To find your approach of how to teach English. Studying ‘Second Language Acquisition’ (SLA) will sharpen your eyes of how the fascinating process of learning a second language (most likely) happens. In the lecture you got an overview about the discussion and undisputed facts of SLA (last semester). The latter are the almost indestructible pillars on which the teaching of English rests today. The former is the bit where you can use the most important question word during university time: why? To find your approach of teaching English you should always ask yourself why you think this is a good approach or not. So this is what we are going to do in this semester’s course: To lay the foundation of your approach of teaching English at the Berufsschule.

Approaches and Methods I (Übung)

Dozent/in: Jonna Charlotte Kaßner

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 6.026 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this course, we will explore what it takes to be an effective English teacher in the diverse landscape of the German school system. On one hand, this journey is deeply personal, as you discover your unique teaching style. On the other hand, it’s guided by a clear framework of proven methods and techniques that will help you navigate the classroom with confidence. Becoming the teacher you aspire to be is not an overnight transformation—it’s a process that unfolds over the course of your Bachelor’s and Master’s studies, and continues as you gain experience beyond university. This is one of the key long-term goals of your academic journey: to develop the most effective way for you to teach English. The starting point of this journey is your portfolio—a tool for self-reflection that you will build on throughout this course, helping you think critically about your identity as a teacher. Studying ‘Second Language Acquisition’ (SLA) is essential in understanding the fascinating process of how students learn a second language. In the lecture, you will gain an overview of both the established facts and ongoing debates within the field of SLA. The undisputed facts form the foundation of modern English teaching, while the debates in both the lecture and this seminar will encourage you to ask the most important question during your studies: Why? Why do certain methods work, and why do others not? Asking 'why' will guide you in developing your personal approach to teaching.
