Inhalt: The accompanying seminar ('Ubung') complements the lecture "Introduction to English Literature". Its aim is to discuss and apply the theory introduced in the lecture. The accompanying seminar comprises group work activities as well as plenary discussions. The primary literature for the lecture “Introduction to English Literature” is also the mandatory reading for the accompanying seminar. The recommended editions for the course are listed below: Fitzgerald, F.Scott: The Great Gatsby [1925]. London: Penguin Classics 2012. (ISBN 9780141389936) If you prefer to work with a digital text, you can find "The Great Gatsby" on www.gutenberg.org. The introduction recommended for this course is: Meyer, Michael: English and American Literatures. Tübingen: Francke 2011. (ISBN 9783825235505) A print copy as well as a digital copy is available in our library. Moodle Course The Moodle course “Introduction to English Literature” has been specifically designed for the entire module (lecture + accompanying seminar (Übung)). Introduction to English literature (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: This lecture introduces students to the theories and practice of studying English literature. You will acquire the competencies required to study literature effectively. For this purpose, we will be looking at a variety of theoretical concepts and contemporary approaches and applying these to literary texts from different historical periods and genres. At the same time, we will consider the social and cultural contexts of literature as well as its aesthetic, rhetorical and ideological aspects. Our discussion will be based on a range of primary texts including the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a play, short stories and poems.
