Application of Psychology in Society - Work A (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this course, the students will learn about two entrepreneurship training programs, which provide participants skills and knowledge in entrepreneurship. The two training programs are the STEP training (www.step-training.com) and the PI training (www.pi-training.org). The STEP training provides students with skills and knowledge to start an entrepreneurial career. The PI training provides existing entrepreneurs with skills and knowledge to show more personal initiative and improve their existing businesses. Both trainings have been implemented in several countries with several thousand participants. In the course, the students will form teams and work on a specific project during the course. They will discuss, develop, and test ideas to improve and extend the training programs according to the framework for developing training programs. The students will perform a needs analysis, develop a mini/wise intervention, design an evaluation study, implement the training, and present the results.

Inhalt: In this course, students will get hands-on experiences about science communication. At the beginning of the course, students will get a short introduction into academic writing and then learn how academic writing is different from scientific communication for laypeople. Besides some theoretical inputs, students will mainly learn science communication by doing. That is, we will employ many different practical exercises in order to get familiarized with science communication. Although the course mainly focuses on writing, we will also touch other forms of science communication such as giving talks for laypeople, communicating on social media, or doing podcasts — to name just a few examples.

Inhalt: CONTENT The module introduces students to applied psychology in the areas of work-/organizational-/economic-, health-/clinical-, and educational psychology. It addresses key societal challenges (e.g., digitalization, demographic change, integration, sustainability) via case studies, discussion of research, interventions, and/or exercises. Topic This seminar covers a range of topics related to the intersection of psychology and health in different areas of life, including the workplace. The seminar entails analysis and discussion of recent studies in the field of health psychology and their implications for applied psychology. Discussions of cases and practical applications as well as with guest speakers and practitioners in the field complete the course. This is a hands-on seminar and students will make choices on the specific topics covered by choosing empirical papers and preparing a presentation. Possible topics include: • Health behaviors (e.g., exercise, nutrition, smoking) and their psychological determinants • Factors influencing adherence to medical recommendations • Coping with chronic illness and disability • Age- or sex- or gender-related health issues and interventions • Cultural or socioeconomic factors influencing health outcomes • The placebo effect and its implications (e.g., for homeopathy) • Mobile apps, wearables, and digital tools for health monitoring and behavior change • Environmental psychology and its impact on health • Presenteeism • Workplace safety
