Inhalt: Positioning yourself for an academic career requires publishing in international, peer-reviewed journals. This block course is intended to help you develop the skills to prepare an article for an international journal. There will be a mixture of activities, including a minimum of ‘lecturing’, but mostly a range of interactive exercises. Some of the themes covered will include (i) structuring a paper, (ii) structuring a paragraph, (iii) writing concise sentences, (iv) matching word count and content, (v) writing an informative abstract, (vi) writing a cover letter to a journal, and (vii) dealing with revisions and rejections. The course will draw on examples from the natural sciences and social sciences, with an emphasis on sustainability-related topics. However, similar writing principles apply to other disciplines, and students from all faculties are encouraged to apply. All communication related to the course will be in English.

Inhalt: For novice academic writers, it is often not all that easy to describe the ideas and positions of others accurately and appropriately. For example, it might not be entirely clear when to use a quotation or a paraphrase or what the proper ratio of quotations and paraphrases should be. Other major challenges include integrating outside sources in a way that these will advance or support an argument or developing a clear position as an author of academic texts (including the related use of the first person). Using several examples and hands-on exercises, we will develop answers to these questions and consider how you, too, can use outside sources effectively and appropriately.

Inhalt: For obvious reasons, this workshop neither aims to provide a basic overview of English grammar nor does it adopt a specific approach to this issue. That said, the grammatical issues addressed in this workshop may help participants (a) to identify and edit common grammatical problems (especially for non-native speakers of English) in their texts and (b) to expand their repertoire when it comes to syntactical patterns that are commonly used in academic writing.

Inhalt: Schreibberaterinnen und Schreibberater begleiten Schreibende im Prozess der Textproduktion. Das Ziel ist, Schreibende dabei zu unterstützen, sich ihres Schreibprozesses bewusst zu werden. Als Teilnehmerin oder Teilnehmer der Ausbildung werden sie in die Sichtweise des Schreibens als Prozess eingeführt, lernen, was das wissenschaftliche Schreiben ausmacht, und wie Sie andere Studierende konstruktiv unterstützen können, ihre Textkompetenz zu optimieren.

Writing with AI Tools (Workshop)

Inhalt: The release of OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT in late November 2022 has sparked heated debates in higher education and beyond about the possibilities and potential pitfalls of this powerful generative AI and similar tools. As the technology underpinning AI tools continues to improve at a dramatic pace, administrators, faculty, and students try to adjust to the new realities. Many of the consequences for learning, teaching, and doing research are difficult to predict, but it seems clear that these tools are here to stay and will affect the ways in which we write in academia and other professional contexts. Providing some guidance in uncertain times, this workshop focuses on technological, legal, ethical, and pedagogical implications of using AI tools for academic work such as writing research papers. Specifically, we will explore some of the following questions: How can AI tools be used properly and ethically during the writing process? What is their potential, what are their limits, and in which case might they even pose a threat to academic codes of conduct or research ethics? How can we use these tools to foster learning and to develop as writers of academic texts? To find at least preliminary answers to these questions, we will use different strategies—tinkering with AI tools, short inputs by the instructor, and writing and other activities to encourage reflection. Think of this workshop not as a class in a traditional sense but as an event at which curious and open minds explore complex issues in an interactive manner. Please note that we will not dwell on how these tools work in a technical sense, although an at least metaphorical understanding (to use Jerome Lanier’s and Cal Newport’s approach) is crucial if you are considering using any of current crop of AI tools. I added a few (very accessible and exceedingly well written) texts to myStudy, which introduce you to these tools and walk you through some of the possible implications for people from all walks of life. As I am writing this description, it is not clear whether or when students will be able to use ChatGTP courtesy of IT Services and in line with European data protection regulations and privacy laws. Please check the website of the Media and Information Centre and, if it is available, request access to this tool. Start playing with it to get a sense of what you might be able to do with it. In case this tool is not yet available via IT Services and you would still like to test some of the AI tools (and not only watch me and others do so), please set up an account with OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google’s Gemini, and/or Elicit (or any other AI tool that you have been using or want to use). Please also bring a laptop or mobile device such as an iPad. Please keep in mind that when using these tools in this manner, you are responsible for your actions.

Lange Nacht des Schreibens 2024 (Workshop)

Inhalt: Kommen Sie am 22. Februar zur 18. Lan­gen Nacht des Schrei­bens! Bringen Sie Ihr aktuelles Schreibprojekt mit und erhalten Sie in Workshops Impulse rund um das wissenschaftliche Schreiben. Erleben Sie die motivierende Kraft des gemeinsamen, strukturierten Schreibens. Unser Team steht während der gesamten Zeit für die Klärung jeglicher Fragen zur Verfügung. Wenn wir schreibend unsere Erfahrungen reflektieren oder schriftlich unsere Ideen mit Anderen teilen, zielen wir oft auf eine Veränderung ab. In einem Tagebuch können wir beispielsweise erkunden, wer wir sind, wer wir sein oder was wir lernen möchten. Ein wissenschaftlicher Zeitschriftenbeitrag verändert idealerweise eine Debatte, indem Autor*innen neue Erkenntnisse beisteuern. So betrachtet kann Schreiben als Mittel zur Transformation auf individueller oder sozialer Ebene verstanden werden. Im Rahmen dieser Langen Nacht erkunden wir, wie Schreibpraktiken sich aufgrund rapider technologischer Entwicklungen wie KI-Werkzeugen oder in Folge der COVID-19 Pandemie verändert haben bzw. sich möglicherweise ändern müssen. Gemeinsam mit Andrea Scott (Pitzer College/European University Viadrina) möchten wir näher betrachten, inwiefern neue Formen des und Ansätze zu Schreiben neue Möglichkeiten für transformatives Lernen bieten und wie so neue inklusive Lernräume geschaffen werden können. For example, reflective writing practices such as keeping a journal or a diary allow us to explore who we are, who we would like to become, and what we would like to learn. Likewise, a journal article, ideally, moves the debate forward by providing new insights. Seen in this light, writing can be understood as a means of transformation at the individual or social level. During this year’s Long Night, we will explore how writing can contribute to processes of transformation. Specifically, we will consider how writing practices could and perhaps should change in response to recent developments, especially rapid advances in the field of AI or the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Getting Started on Your Writing Project (Workshop)

Inhalt: Starting a writing session or embarking on a new writing project can be a challenge. In this workshop, we consider why even experienced writers may, at times, have a hard time getting a project off the ground. More importantly, we explore what successful writers do to overcome various challenges, and we test tools that are available to those who have to get some writing done. To figure out what is best for each and every one of us and to reflect on our approach to writing, we use short writing prompts and related approaches.

Inhalt: Collaborative writing is quite common in academic and other professional contexts. Many if not most people probably learn how to write together by simply doing so repeatedly, in different contexts. Eventually, they figure out how to get stuff done and how to deal with a wide range of challenges, for example interpersonal conflict, miscommunication, missed deadlines, or suboptimal results. Many of these common challenges associated with collaborative writing can be avoided, and great results be achieved, by following basic principles, implementing basic strategies, and using digital collaboration tools. This workshop addresses these dimensions and aims to prepare participants for group work at university and beyond.

Our peer writing tutors begin each session with a short warm-up writing activity and facilitate structured writing sessions.
