Inhalt: Positioning yourself for an academic career requires publishing in international, peer-reviewed journals. This block course is intended to help you develop the skills to prepare an article for an international journal. There will be a mixture of activities, including a minimum of ‘lecturing’, but mostly a range of interactive exercises. Some of the themes covered will include (i) structuring a paper, (ii) structuring a paragraph, (iii) writing concise sentences, (iv) matching word count and content, (v) writing an informative abstract, (vi) writing a cover letter to a journal, and (vii) dealing with revisions and rejections. The course will draw on examples from the natural sciences and social sciences, with an emphasis on sustainability-related topics. However, similar writing principles apply to other disciplines, and students from all faculties are encouraged to apply. All communication related to the course will be in English.

Inhalt: Das Schreiben einer Monografie beinhaltet Herausforderungen, die hier beleuchtet werden sollen: Zu Beginn ist die Dauer des Promotionsprojektes nur schwer einschätzbar; gegen Ende scheint die Zeit immer schneller zu verrinnen. Hier sind nicht daher nur Planungs-, sondern auch emotionale Umgangsstrategien gefragt. Eine weitere Herausforderdung ist der stets wachsende Umfang der zu berücksichtigen Informationen: Je mehr man liest, schreibt und sammelt, desto größer wird der Umfang, und ein gutes Informationsmanagement von Anfang an ist somit essenziell. Ein ähnliches Problem stellt die zunehmende Textmenge dar, besonders wenn die endgültige Struktur erst im Laufe des Prozesses entsteht. Hier müssen verschiedene Planungs- und Überarbeitungsstrategien angewandt werden. Des Weiteren begleitet das Dissertationsprojekt Promovierende täglich – an Abenden, Wochenenden und sogar im Urlaub. Hier sind Abgrenzungsstrategien notwendig, damit das Projekt nicht das gesamte Leben dominiert. Promovieren endet nicht mit der Fertigstellung des Textes und der Disputation. Der Prozess der Veröffentlichung gehört dazu und ist daher sinnvollerweise frühzeitig mit zu bedenken. Es geht hierbei in einem ersten Schritt um die Frage, wo und wie publiziert werden soll. In einem zweiten, wie evtl. erforderliche Mittel hierfür eingeworben werden können. Ziel ist es, im Laufe des Semesters den Prozess durch regelmäßige Treffen, Inputs, gemeinsames Schreiben und konstruktives Feedback zu unterstützen. Auf diese Weise sollen produktive Routinen entwickelt werden, die zum erfolgreichen Abschluss des Projektes beitragen können.

Inhalt: For novice academic writers, it is often not all that easy to describe the ideas and positions of others accurately and appropriately. For example, it might not be entirely clear when to use a quotation or a paraphrase or what the proper ratio of quotations and paraphrases should be. Other major challenges include integrating outside sources in a way that these will advance or support an argument or developing a clear position as an author of academic texts (including the related use of the first person). Using several examples and hands-on exercises, we will develop answers to these questions and consider how you, too, can use outside sources effectively and appropriately.

How to Find a Topic, Conduct Research, and Get Started on a Writing Project (Workshop)

Inhalt: In this workshop, you will acquire the necessary skills needed to begin and develop writing projects such as longer research papers or a thesis. More specifically, you will test several tools that allow you generate and organize ideas, to identify a topic, to limit the scope of an investigation, and to draft the first proposal for this project. By adding these versatile tools to your repertoire, you will also be better prepared to tackle some of the common challenges at the beginning of the writing process, for example procrastination or information overload. Learn how to juggle different practices—conducting research, reviewing the literature, developing and outline, and/or writing heuristically—and get a head start on your next major writing project or your bachelor or master’s thesis.

Inhalt: In this workshop, you will learn more about essays, research papers ("Hausarbeiten"), and project reports, that is, three major academic genres that you are likely to encounter as a student at Leuphana. By analyzing examples and completing a variety of hands-on (writing) exercises, you will not only deepen your understanding of these genres and the differences between the three, but also acquire and develop your ability to draft and revise these kinds of texts. Writing with AI Tools (Workshop)

Inhalt: The release of OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT in late November 2022 has sparked heated debates in higher education and beyond about the possibilities and potential pitfalls of this powerful generative AI and similar tools. As the technology underpinning AI tools continues to improve at a dramatic pace, administrators, faculty, and students try to adjust to the new realities. Many of the consequences for learning, teaching, and doing research are difficult to predict, but it seems clear that these tools are here to stay and will affect the ways in which we write in academia and other professional contexts. Providing some guidance in uncertain times, this workshop focuses on technological, legal, ethical, and pedagogical implications of using AI tools for academic work such as writing research papers. Specifically, we will explore some of the following questions: How can AI tools be used properly and ethically during the writing process? What is their potential, what are their limits, and in which case might they even pose a threat to academic codes of conduct or research ethics? How can we use these tools to foster learning and to develop as writers of academic texts? To find at least preliminary answers to these questions, we will use different strategies—tinkering with AI tools, short inputs by the instructor, and writing and other activities to encourage reflection. Think of this workshop not as a class in a traditional sense but as an event at which curious and open minds explore complex issues in an interactive manner. Please note that we will not dwell on how these tools work in a technical sense, although an at least metaphorical understanding (to use Jerome Lanier’s and Cal Newport’s approach) is crucial if you are considering using any of current crop of AI tools. I added a few (very accessible and exceedingly well written) texts to myStudy, which introduce you to these tools and walk you through some of the possible implications for people from all walks of life. As I am writing this description, it is not clear whether or when students will be able to use ChatGTP courtesy of IT Services and in line with European data protection regulations and privacy laws. Please check the website of the Media and Information Centre and, if it is available, request access to this tool. Start playing with it to get a sense of what you might be able to do with it. In case this tool is not yet available via IT Services and you would still like to test some of the AI tools (and not only watch me and others do so), please set up an account with OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google’s Gemini, and/or Elicit (or any other AI tool that you have been using or want to use). Please also bring a laptop or mobile device such as an iPad. Please keep in mind that when using these tools in this manner, you are responsible for your actions.

Inhalt: As a university student, you often begin to acquire new knowledge in your field by taking notes in seminars or lectures. If you review and rework these notes, for example by developing key points using additional resources provided by instructors or materials from the library, you are more likely to master the content and achieve better results on exams. In this event, you will try out several note-taking techniques (e.g., the Cornell Note-Taking System) and learn more about active learning strategies, note organization, and retention techniques. You will leave with several practical tools and strategies that you can readily customize to fit your goals, needs, and situation.

A Basic Introduction to Academic Writing and Research (Workshop)

Inhalt: In this basic introduction for bachelor students in their first semester, you will learn about several key dimensions and practices of academic life: following the principles of academic integrity and good scientific practice; planning writing processes and navigating related challenges; reading scientific texts; and finding, referring to, and citing sources accurately and appropriately. Do not expect to become an expert in 90 minutes; we cannot cover all aspects in depth (or discuss individual practices comprehensively) during this event. That said, you will, ideally, leave with a better sense of what you can and need to do to acquire the range of skills you need to succeed in your degree program, with clear goals for your academic development.

Inhalt: Digital technologies in general and AI in particular have changed the ways in which we can read scientific texts today. On our devices, we, for example, access and engage with books and articles, and several AI tools allow us, potentially, to process information at an unprecedented scale. Reading in this manner has, however, several drawbacks, as we tend to read HTML or PDFs in a more superficial manner than print. Fortunately, the literature on reading in digital environments provides guidance on how to mitigate potential risks, prioritize cognitive engagement and learning, and improve the quality of reading outcomes. In this workshop, you will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of digital reading (and reading with AI tools) as well as hands-on reading strategies and techniques for this context. If you have not attended the general introduction to academic reading prior to this event, I recommend that you download and review the resources provided for this workshop on myStudy. I will refer back to some of the points to discuss, for example, the difference between analog and digital reading. Inhalt: Digitale Technologien und insbesondere KI verändern die Art und Weise, wie wir heute wissenschaftliche Texte lesen und mit ihnen arbeiten. Auf unseren Endgeräten greifen wir beispielsweise auf online verfügbare Bücher und Artikel zu, und verschiedene KI Werkzeuge ermöglichen es uns potenziell, Informationen in einem bisher ungekannten Umfang zu sammeln, aufzubereiten und zu verarbeiten. Das Lesen auf diese Weise hat jedoch auch einige Nachteile, da wir unter anderem HTML Seiten und PDFs tendenziell oberflächlicher lesen als gedruckte Texte. Glücklicherweise zeigt die Literatur zum Lesen in digitalen Umgebungen Wege auf, wie mögliche Risiken gemindert, aktives Lernen gestaltet und die Resultate digitalen Lesens verbessert werden können. In diesem Workshop lernen Sie die Vor- und Nachteile des digitalen Lesens (und des Lesens mit KI Werkzeugen) sowie praktische Lesestrategien und -techniken für diesen Kontext kennen. Wenn Sie die allgemeine Einführung ins akademische Lesen vor dieser Veranstaltung nicht besucht haben, empfehle ich Ihnen, die für diesen Workshop auf myStudy bereitgestellten Materialien zu sichten.
