Competences and Standards in the EFL Classroom - Seminar 1 (Seminar)

Inhalt: Since the publication of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment and its adaptation to the Bildungsstandards, language teachers have started to reconsider task orientated approaches and the role of the four skills as well as of mediation in the EFL classroom. In this seminar we will look at definitions of communicative and linguistic competence (competence models like the CEF) and then focus on assessment procedures as used in VERA 8 (Vergleichsarbeiten 8. Klasse) and other standardised tests of proficiency. The focus will be on both receptive and productive skills. We will also look at educational and political consequences of standard setting and centralised testing and portfolio assessment. Students will be introduced to methods of competence-oriented language teaching.

3. Semester - Implementing and Researching Innovative Approaches in Foreign Language Pedagogy - A Blended Mobility Project (Englisch) (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course will be offered as an ERASMUS+Blended Intensive Program. This means that it will combine 1) online lectures, 2) international online collaboration in working groups between student teachers from across Europe (Spain, Finland, Netherlands, ...; 11 November 2024 - 10 January 2025) and 3) a one-week period at the University of León, Spain (9-14 December 2024), which will include the completion of project work and other events. This seminar is dedicated to exploring innovative practices in foreign language teaching while promoting intercultural exchange and research-based learning. Participants will investigate new developments in language teaching and critically reflect on teaching traditions in their countries, exchanging experiences with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Through online lectures, discussions, and readings, participants will delve into key issues related to innovation in foreign language teaching. They will engage in discussions with student teachers from different European countries to explore innovative practices in language education. Additionally, participants will develop classroom activities and learning materials based on the course themes. The seminar focuses on research methods relevant to investigating innovation in language education, including qualitative research, interview-based methods, design-based research, and action research.Participants will develop, implement, and research their teaching concepts and innovative practices in language education exploring the conditions, characteristics, and implementation of innovative teaching methods. The development of research projects will serve as a framework for this exploration. Exemplary Research Questions: • What are the key challenges and opportunities in implementing innovative language teaching methods in diverse educational settings? • What is the impact of innovative teaching methods on language learning processes/outcomes? • How are innovative language teaching practices perceived in different cultural contexts? Possible Research Methods: • Surveys or interviews with language teachers and learners • Analysis of classroom interactions • Observational studies of language teaching practices
Innovation in Foreign Language Education 2025-26 (Projektseminar)

Inhalt: IMPORTANT: Unfortunately, registrations are no longer possible as this course is already fully booked. Course Overview This course is offered as an ERASMUS+ Blended Intensive Programme. It provides a unique opportunity to: 1. Experience online master classes by invited guest speakers about innovative methodologies in foreign language teaching 2. Work on real-world challenges facing foreign language educators in international online working groups 3. Spend a week-long period at the University of León, Spain (09-13 December 2025) developing solutions to these challenges with expert feedback This challenge-based course is dedicated to solving real-world problems in foreign language teaching while promoting intercultural exchange and research-based learning. Participants will tackle authentic challenges currently facing European foreign language educators, collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, and develop innovative, implementable solutions. Through online lectures, discussions, and collaborative work, participants will address key challenges in foreign language education. Working in international teams, they will select one challenge to solve, access expert knowledge through recorded lectures and other resources, develop innovative solutions, and pitch these solutions to experts for feedback before presenting their final solutions to the entire cohort. Currently the following universities are engaging there Teacher Education students in the BIP: • The University of León, Spain • Leuphana Universität, Germany • Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany • Oulu University, Finland • Tallinn University, Estonia • ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland • Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands Challenge-Based Learning Approach: This BIP uses a challenge-based learning approach where: 1. Challenge Selection: International student groups select and analyse a real-world challenge in foreign language education, understanding its context and implications across different European countries 2. Research & Exploration: During the online stages, groups research their challenge and access recorded lectures and other materials to deepen their understanding 3. International Collaboration: Participants will collaborate in international teams to develop innovative, feasible solutions to their chosen challenge 4. Solution Development: In León, groups finalise their solutions and pitch them to rotating panels of experts for feedback. 5. Final Presentations: Groups present their solutions to the entire cohort, followed by voting for the best solution to each challenge. The Challenges: Participating groups will select one of the following challenges to address throughout the course: 1. Grammar Integration Challenge: How can foreign language teachers meaningfully integrate grammar instruction into task-based and action-oriented approaches without reverting to isolated grammar drills, while ensuring learners develop both fluency and accuracy? 2. AI Integration Challenge: How can foreign language teachers ethically and effectively integrate artificial intelligence tools (like ChatGPT, translation tools) into language pedagogy while ensuring authentic language learning? 3. Intercultural Competence Challenge: How can language teachers foster meaningful intercultural competence beyond stereotypes in increasingly polarized societies where certain cultural differences are politicised? 4. Motivation & Engagement Challenge: How can foreign language teachers address declining motivation for language learning in an era where automatic translation is becoming increasingly sophisticated?
