Inhalt: In this seminar we will explore constitutive elements of our everyday life. While fire, water, earth and air have served since ancient times as the Western classification system, we ask to what extent electricity underpin human existence at the beginning of the 21st century to a similar extent. The guiding question of this seminar is whether and to what extent electricity can be considered the fifth constitutive element. The question touches on the proclamation of the Anthropocene, the geological epoch in which humans became a geological factor, but shifts perspective. The seminar is experience-based. It departs from generating related questions from diverse disciplinary and individual perspectives of participants and mobilizes geo- and auto-ethnographic approaches to appropriate a place from where we will reflect on our everyday life. In preparatory sessions we will jointly frame the interdisciplinary scope of the seminar and introduce both geo- and auto-ethnographic methods that will be applied. The main part of the seminar will take place in a remote area of the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, Valle Maggia. Approximations and appropriations of the area will serve as a baseline for the exploration of our research question. The seminar forms part of a series of activities conducted between (2025-2026) by the Responsive Research Collective, the Paulo Freire Center and the Fondazione Rivivere Canton Sott.
