Theories of representation (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Dawid Friedrich

wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 09.04.2020 - 09.07.2020 | C 14.202 Seminarraum

Inhalt: "The concept of political representation is misleadingly simple: everyone seems to know what it is, yet few can agree on any particular definition. In fact, there is an extensive literature that offers many different definitions of this elusive concept" (quote from Stanford Encyclopedia on Political Representation). What is political representation? Are representation and democracy inextricably linked to each other? What are the challenges of political representation? How does political representation "travel" across the borders of the nation-state? What is the relation of political representation to other key words of modern democratic theory, particularly participation and deliberation? This set of questions will be addressed in this seminar by collaboratively reading, commenting and discussing key texts of contemporary political theory.
