wöchentlich | Dienstag | 13:00 - 13:45 | 06.04.2021 - 09.07.2021 | C 14.006 Seminarraum | BASICS OF ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS AND OCEANOGRAPHY (Markus Quante)
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 16:15 - 17:00 | 06.04.2021 - 09.07.2021 | C 14.006 Seminarraum | PROCESSES IN ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION AND THE EXCHANGE BETWEEN OCEAN AND ATMOSPHERE (Volker Matthias)

Inhalt: BASICS OF ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS AND OCEANOGRAPHY: This part of the lecture focuses on the processes in the atmosphere and in the oceans that have special effects on environmental issues. The general circulation, wind systems as well as turbulent flows in the atmosphere will be discussed and the wind-driven surface currents as well as the thermohaline circulation in the oceans will be presented. The vertical mixing of near-surface water masses and the formation of deep water will be explained with regard to the continuance of anthropogenic inputs. PROCESSES IN ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION AND THE EXCHANGE BETWEEN OCEAN AND ATMOSPHERE This part of the lecture gives a general introduction to the physical and chemical processes of gaseous and particulate trace substances in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) which pose a potential risk to humans and the environment. In particular, the atmospheric cycles of anthropogenically emitted trace substances, vertical transport by uplift and turbulence and its significance for long-range transport as well as trace substances and processes of formation and transport of airborne substances which contribute to the acidification and eutrophication of ecosystems or which are responsible for the formation of low-lying ozone will be explained. TRANSPORTS IN THE SOIL AND TRANSPORT OF SEDIMENT IN RIVERS AND ESTUARIES: This part of the lecture deals with the essential soil physical, soil chemical and soil biological properties in connection with mobility and transport of substances. Practical research projects are used as examples for sediment transport, deposition processes and the behavior of sedimentary substances in soils.

Transport of matter in the environment: Natural science and political aspects of long range transport (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Volker Matthias, Markus Quante

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 17:00 - 17:45 | 06.04.2021 - 09.07.2021 | C 14.006 Seminarraum

Inhalt: The seminar deals with the atmospheric cycles of trace substances emitted by anthropogenic activities which are subject to chemical changes and transport from the mesoscale (a few decakilometers) to several thousand kilometers (long-range transport) in the troposphere. - Global aspects of airborne Sulphur and Nitrogen compounds as well as volatile organic compounds which contribute to acidification and eutrophication of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems or which are responsible for the formation of low-lying ozone will be discussed. - Using practical research examples from the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht (HZG) and from current international research, the significance of transport and chemical transformation processes for atmospheric pollution on the regional to intercontinental scale becomes clear. For this purpose, emission maps and inventories will be discussed, and the origin of air pollutants will be explained. - In addition, the political aspects and regulations of cross-border pollutant transport are discussed. Hereby, the focus will be on projects and regulations of the UN and Europe (e.g. Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution). The concept of Critical Levels and Loads within the UN-ECE Convention will be introduced and in particular the interface between atmospheric deposition and the transport of pollutants in soils and groundwater will be examined. - Emission maps, inventories, formation of air pollutants (in the field of water the European Water Framework Directive and the IMO regulations are to be mentioned)
